Due to Russia’s blockade of ports, Ukraine has virtually stopped shipping grain abroad.
The first ship with Ukrainian grain left the Romanian port of Constanta, the manager of port operator Comvex said, Reuters writes on Friday, April 29.
According to the publication, this vessel is Unity N with 71,000 tons of corn.
The publication recalls that due to the war, Ukraine’s ports were blocked by Russia, as a result, the world’s fourth largest grain exporter was forced to send goods by rail via the western border or by small river ports on the Danube to Romania.
“This is the first Panamax-class ship with Ukrainian corn to leave the port. To support the export of Ukrainian grain means to prevent the massive wave of global hunger provoked by the blockade of Ukrainian ports,” he said. Comvex President Viorel Panait.
He also said that earlier this week, the operator had finished loading approximately 35,000 tonnes of Ukrainian iron ore, and the second vessel is expected to be loaded around May 15.
“Compared to the first moment that everyone is looking for alternatives, transport corridors for these exports are gradually being formed,” Panayt said.
So far, about 80 thousand tons of Ukrainian grain have been shipped to Constanta, another 80 thousand tons have been approved and are on their way, the Constanta port manager said.
It was noted that in order to improve the infrastructure, the Romanian authorities decided to restore some railway lines connecting the ports to the Ukrainian borders.
Earlier, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that Ukraine had found at least three options for exporting products during the war. Instead of ports for grain exports, they began to use rail, but the volume of deliveries was several times lower.
