“I wanted to share when I was safe from falling back into the dark side of it all. I had to wait until I was safely sober – and away from the active disease of alcoholism and drug addiction – to write all of this. And Most importantly, I am almost certain that it will help people,” said the star.
It turns out he almost died at the age of 49. Perry suffered from a gastrointestinal perforation and actually spent weeks fighting for his life after his colon ruptured from an opioid overdose. He was in a coma for two weeks, hospitalized for five months, and had to use a colostomy bag for nine months.
“When I was first admitted to the hospital, the doctors told my family that I had a 2 percent chance of survival. I was put on a machine called ECMO that does all the breathing for your heart and lungs. And it is called the Hail Mary. There is no one who does not live,” admitted the artist.
When Perry first starred in Friends at age 24, her alcohol addiction was just beginning to show.
“In a way, I can handle it. But by the time I was 34, I really had a lot of problems. But there were years when I was sober. Season 9 was the year “I was sober the whole way. And guess what season I got nominated for Best Actor? I thought, ‘That should tell me something,'” he admitted.
There was a time when Perry took 55 Vicodins a day and lost 128 pounds.
“I don’t know how to stop. If the police come to my house and say, ‘If you drink tonight, we’ll put you in jail,’ I’ll start packing. I can’t stop because the disease and addiction were progressing. it gets worse and worse as you get older. I’m pretty healthy now. I don’t need to go to the gym anymore because I don’t want to play superheroes. But no, I’m a pretty healthy person now,” he concluded.
