Ukrainian refugee Sofia Karkadym returned to Ukraine after being abandoned by Briton Tony Garnett, who broke up for the sake of their relationship with his wife and two children. The Daily Mail writes about it.
Karkadym said that immediately after his return, he witnessed the funeral of a Ukrainian soldier killed by Russian troops. He saw the funeral procession on the way to the bus.
“My country needs peace, and so do I,” said a Ukrainian who came to visit his grandmother in Kolomyia, Ivano-Frankivsk region.
“I’m happy to be at home. I miss Tony so much, but I don’t want to cry because of him. I feel the most uncomfortable while Russians are in my country. I felt better when I got to Ukraine and I can speak of my own language. But I was scared when I arrived in Lviv because the alarm went off at the train station. And people thought that there might be some kind of attack from the Russians. I felt that my country was depressed because of the war and everything, what is happening in the world. When I was on the bus, I saw the funeral of a soldier. I started to cry again. I really remembered what was happening here. Ukrainians were being killed,” Karkadym said.
He added that his grandmother, an actress, cooked his favorite buckwheat with meat and gave him a lot of love. In a week, the girl plans to go to Kyiv to meet her mother and sister.
In addition, Karkadym added that it is difficult for him to understand that Garnett can no longer have children (he had a vasectomy) and that he already has two children with his ex-partner, with whom he constantly talks.
“I think that now that Tony and I have the time and space to think about everything, maybe we understand how important we were to each other when we were lost,” she said.
At the same time, Garnett said he didn’t want to say anything more about Sophia.
“I can tell you that I am glad Sophia is safe in Ukraine. We are still comrades. And it will be nice to see her again if and when she returns,” he said.
