Equipping the car with an unmanned system increases its cost by $50,000, but it’s still cheaper than paying the driver.
TuSimple conducted a road test of an autonomous truck in the US. He traveled 951 miles from Nogales, Arizona to Oklahoma City delivering fresh groceries. A person was involved in loading and unloading, but the truck drove itself most of the way. CNN writes about it.
“Since the system is not yet fully ready, we always have a driver and a safety engineer on board during the test, but the car drives in full autonomy: the driver does not touch the steering wheel,” said TuSimple President and CEO Cheng Lu.
The trip took 14 hours and was completed 10 hours earlier than if a person had driven. This was achieved due to the fact that the autonomous truck does not need to sleep, because according to US laws, drivers can only work 11 hours a day.
The price of the truck is around $200,000. It’s cheaper than paying a human driver, Lou said.
“If you take $50,000 and divide it by a million miles, the average life of a truck, that means you’re adding five cents per mile to the cost of transportation. But you’re saving on a driver’s salary, which in the United States is from $80,000. to $120,000 per year or from 80 cents to $1.20 per mile. Today, direct labor costs are about 50% of the cost of operating a truck,” said the company’s president.
Meanwhile, this does not mean that unmanned trucks will put people out of work. They only work on highways, and drivers will drive cars in cities
It will be remembered that the first robotic taxi without a driver appeared in China in 2020.
In Kyiv, a car without a driver crossed a six-lane road
