Camila Pitanga, Pedro Freire, among other audiovisual names, praised the launch of one of the most awarded films of 2024
In an atmosphere of celebration of national cinema, important figures from the industry highlighted yet another major production being shown in the country, “Baby”, directed by Marcelo Caetano.
After building an extensive festival CV and winning more than 25 awards, the feature film hit theaters on Thursday, selling out screenings in several cities.
At Cine Brasília, more than 600 spectators were welcomed to the screening followed by a debate with the director last Saturday. In Porto Alegre, Salvador and Rio de Janeiro, cinemas had to open a second theater to meet public demand.
“What a precious and simple film. A film that after you leave the cinema you miss the characters, who leave the current Manichaeism. Ronaldo and Baby are like stones that collide and meet, round each other and follow their paths in the bed of a river which is life”, he commented Camila Pitanga.
The director and screenwriter, Pedro Freirespared no praise, “One of the best Brazilian films I’ve seen in recent years. ‘Baby’ is an event. Coming from a first feature that I really like, Marcelo Caetano He overcomes himself and makes a love film in the underworld of São Paulo that anguishes you and makes you fall in love at the same time. There’s a silly side to comparing with other directors, but an unlikely crossover between Fassbinder and Wong Kar Wai. Yes, this film is at that level of discussion. Just go see.”
Synopsis of the film
Shortly after being released from a Youth Detention Center, Wellington (João Pedro Mariano) finds himself adrift on the streets of São Paulo.
During a visit to a porn cinema, he meets Ronaldo (Ricardo Teodoro), a prostitute, who teaches him new ways to survive.
Little by little, their relationship turns into a passion full of conflicts, between exploration and protection, jealousy and complicity.
