The miniseries that portrays the life of driver Ayrton Senna won over the public and reached the top 10 in 58 countries, winning an unprecedented Brazilian title
The Brazilian miniseries “Senna”, which tells the story of the legendary three-time Formula 1 champion Ayrton Senna (1960-1994), won the position of most watched non-English language production on Netflix in the last week. According to data released by the platform, the series accumulated 5.8 million views, more than double the 2.6 million recorded in the first three days after launch.
The work surpassed productions such as the South Korean dramas “When the Phone Rings” (4.3 million) and “The Trunk” (4.1 million), the German hit “The Empress” (3.6 million), the anime Japanese “Dan Da Dan” (2.4 million) and the Turkish series “Asaf” (2.3 million), which was considered one of the biggest international releases of the period.
Big highlight
In Netflix’s general ranking, which includes productions in English, “Senna” reached third place, behind only the psychological thriller “Irracional”, starring Colman Domingo, with 13.3 million views, and the spy drama “Black Doves”, starring Keira Knightley, which totaled 10.8 million.
The miniseries appeared in Netflix’s Top 10 in 58 nations, including Germany, Australia, Argentina, Spain, France, Italy, Morocco, Mexico, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. Furthermore, it topped the lists in three countries: Brazil, Paraguay and Portugal.
With six episodes, the production starring Gabriel Leone explores highlights of his career Ayrton Senna in Formula 1, in addition to bringing aspects of his personal life to light. Special emphasis is given to the relationship with the presenter Xuxa, which is covered in an exclusive chapter.
However, the series generated controversy for giving less space to the relationship with Adriane Galisteu, the pilot’s last partner before his death.
International fame
Senna received an unprecedented nomination for the Critics Choice Awards in the category of Best Foreign Language Series, becoming the first Brazilian production to achieve this nomination. Among the competitors are prominent titles such as the second season of “Round 6” (Netflix), “Pachinko” (Apple TV+), “A Amiga Genial” (Max), “Acapulco” (Apple TV+), “As Leis de Lidia Poët” (Netflix), “Citadel: Honey Bunny” (Prime Video) and “The Machine” (Disney+).
