The residence of the British monarchs is beginning its biggest upgrade in a decade, costing $463 million.
Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the British monarchs, is temporarily suspending its reception of visitors due to a major renovation that will last until 2027. The Times reported this.
The total cost of the work will be $463 million, most of which will be covered by the state treasury, except for the modernization of the north wing, whose costs will be borne by the monarch.
The renovations included replacing electrical wiring, heating and plumbing systems that hadn’t been updated since the 1950s and posed a fire and flood hazard. The goal of the project is to ensure the longevity of the building for future generations.
State events will temporarily move to Windsor Castle. The last major event to be held at the palace before the closure is the visit of the Emir of Qatar next month.
Charles III himself moved to the west wing of the palace, where he placed his office in the Orleans Room – where he was born in 1948.
“He has always appreciated history, and the decision to place his office in the Orleans Room was certainly made with a smile,” commented a source close to the monarch.
The north wing was once used as the private apartments of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
It was previously reported that Buckingham Palace unveiled a new portrait of King Charles.
