The current British monarch went to see the first screening in London of the sequel to the cinema classic; look!
After a hiatus of almost a quarter of a century since the release of “Gladiator”, the film that immortalized Russell Crowe in the role of the fearless Maximus, the eagerly awaited sequel, “Gladiator II”, made its world premiere in London this Wednesday, December 13th.
The event was marked by the illustrious presence of King Charles III, who attended the screening alongside cast members such as Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, Connie Nielsen, Paul Mescal, Fred Hechinger and Pedro Pascal, in addition to the renowned director Ridley Scott.
The occasion was part of the 72nd edition of the “Royal Film Performance”, a charity event promoted by The Film and TV Charity, an institution of which the British monarch is patron. In a message posted on the royal family’s social media, the importance of the night was highlighted in support of those who work behind the scenes in the film and television industries in the United Kingdom.
Charity event
According to information from the “Deadline” portal, this initiative has been a significant source of fundraising for the charity, which will celebrate its centenary in 2024. The previous edition of the event took place in 2022 with the premiere of “Top Gun: Maverick”, which featured the presence of the prince William and Kate Middleton. However, in 2023, the event was canceled due to the Hollywood writers’ strike.
In the plot of “Gladiator II”, 16 years after Maximus’ heroic death, the narrative focuses on the character Lucius, played by Paul Mescal. Lucius finds himself captive in Rome after his land is invaded by a fleet led by General Acacius, a role assumed by Pedro Pascal.
Lucius’ combative prowess catches the attention of Macrinus, played by Denzel Washington, who manipulates circumstances to force him to fight as a gladiator in the Colosseum. This new plot promises to revive the epic spirit that established its predecessor.
