The renowned former boxer passed away this Thursday, at the age of 66. José Adilson Rodrigues dos Santospopularly known as Maguila. The athlete was facing Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a neurological condition that presents symptoms similar to Alzheimer’s, resulting from repeated impacts to the head — a condition frequently observed among former boxers.
The news of his death was confirmed by Irani Pinheirothe boxer’s wife, in an interview with the program Balanço Geral, on Record. Maguila He lived for several years in a clinic located in Itu, in the interior of São Paulo, where he received treatment for “dementia pugilística”, a progressive neurodegenerative disease with no cure directly associated with the blows suffered during his extensive sporting career.
During his career in professional boxing, which spanned from 1983 to 2000, Maguila participated in 85 official combats, according to Quem.
