know how to read and interpret correctly

Considered the “CPFs” of clothing, labels can help extend the useful life of items

Did you know that clothing labels are great allies when we talk about the longevity and durability of items? After all, they are an instruction manual, so you can understand and correctly interpret all the information about a garment.

Six pieces of information are mandatory on labels regulated under the Law: brand identification/name, company tax identification (CNPJ), origin of manufacture of the item, size of the item, composition of the fabric material and care for conservation and cleaning.

According to Karine Liotino, CEO of the company Etiqueta Certa (regulatory compliance platform for labels for textile products), essential care for the garment is not always carried out correctly by consumers, as many are unaware of the information related to the raw material of the clothing. , in addition to not knowing how to interpret the conservation and washing symbols.

The first tip is to understand the specific care for each type of fabric, in order to preserve its quality and appearance. For example, cotton items can be machine washed, while wool items need to be dry cleaned. It is on the label that you will find instructions on water temperature, the type of detergent/soap to be used and the drying method, thus avoiding problems such as shrinkage or discoloration.

Furthermore, understanding and applying what the symbols say will also help prevent further damage and contribute to a longer service life of the parts. Understand the symbols:

Ironing symbol

If there is a dot within the design, this means that the piece can be ironed at a temperature of, at most, 110ºC. If there are two points, the temperature must be up to 150º. With three, you should iron your clothes at up to 200ºC. Now, if there is an X, it means you cannot use the iron. When using a temperature higher than that indicated, the fibers dry out and become rough and, in some cases, the damage can be irreversible.

Drying symbol

When the pieces have a dot within this symbol (a square), they must be placed in the drying machine; When there are two, they can be put in the dryer, but you have to use the normal temperature. If it has an X, it cannot be tumble dried. With a vertical line, drying must be done with the clothes hanging. If it has two vertical lines, it must be hung, but cannot be twisted. With a horizontal stroke, it must be made in a plane; and with two, in one plane without being able to twist it. And, finally, a diagonal line at the top left – attributed to the flat or vertical drying symbols – instructs that it must be in the shade.

Bleach symbol

The triangle represents the use of bleach: if the cotton clothes are white, it indicates that you can use it if necessary. The diagonal lines allow the use of oxygen bleach, while the X above prohibits the use of any type of bleach.

Wash symbol

In a type of washtub, it will always be accompanied by a number that expresses the maximum temperature of the water in which the cotton item must be washed, without suffering damage. When there is no line underneath, it means that the clothes can be machine washed on the normal cycle; with a dash, it must be in a delicate cycle; two strokes, wash on a delicate cycle and cannot be wrung out. The symbol of a hand inside means that it must only be manual; and an X, identifies that it should not be machine washed.

“Knowing how to correctly interpret clothing labels is essential for maintaining the quality, durability and appearance of your items. Furthermore, this practice can lead to financial savings and contribute to more responsible consumption”, reiterates Karine Liotino.
