The director of the new documentary about the brothers revealed the subject that Erik and Lyle refused to talk about during production; find out which
In recent years, the narrative around Lyle and Erik Menendezbrothers sentenced to life imprisonment for murder of his parents, once again gained prominence. The renewed attention is due to projects launched by Netflix that explore the case.
Next week, the documentary premieres “The Menendez Brothers”, promising to bring new perspectives on this complex story. The project director, Alejandro Hartmann, recently revealed that there was one specific topic that the brothers avoided discussing.
As reported by People magazine, Hartmann explained that during filming, Lyle and Erik refused to address the possibility of a retrial.Eric, specifically, he avoided the topic so as not to raise unfounded hopes. “Erik I didn’t want to talk about it because I didn’t want to have false expectations”, explained the director.
Hartmann also shared that Erik initially hesitated to participate in the documentary, but ended up being convinced by Lyle after discovering that the director was not American. “After 30 years of not speaking, maybe it was time”, he reflected Hartmann. The connection between them began with trivial conversations about football, evolving into deeper interviews.
What does the documentary talk about?
The documentary highlights the brothers’ distinct personalities. Lyle was shaped to be the heir to the family business, while Eric, more reserved, he had a close bond with his mother. Hartmann notes that Lyle often tries to maintain control of situations, while Erik tends to be more direct in his speeches. “They are both very deep and intelligent people,” he commented.
Regarding current life in prison, Lyle is dedicated to community projects aimed at improving the quality of life of inmates, including initiatives to introduce animals into the prison environment. Already Erik focuses on personal development through spirituality and the arts.
Asked about regrets, Hartmann believes that the brothers reflect daily on their past actions. “I think they probably think every day about what happened,” he said.
The Menendez case
In 1989, Lyle and Erik Menendez committed the murders of their parents in their luxurious residence in Beverly Hills. At the time, they claimed to have been victims of physical and emotional abuse throughout their lives, justifying the crime as an act of self-defense, according to Caras Brasil. However, prosecutors argued that the real motive was to obtain the parents’ million-dollar inheritance, evidenced by the brothers’ excessive spending after the crime.
Recently, George GascónLos Angeles prosecutor, announced a review of the case in light of new evidence that has emerged. A hearing to discuss the possible reopening of the process is scheduled for the end of November.
