The role in the 1959 film Gidget was the most important of her career. The film was a huge success, popularizing Californian surf culture and making Darren a 1960s teen idol. Thanks to this project, he also started his singing career, performing the main song for the film. The song’s success led to the release of several other tracks, including the 1961 hit Goodbye Cruel World, which peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In the 1970s, Darren worked actively in television, appearing in the series Charlie’s Angels, Hawaii Five-0, Vegas, The Love Boat and others. He also hosted the PBS interview show Portrait of a Legend and continued his musical activities.
From 1983 to 1986, James starred in the police drama TJ Hooker, where he played officer Jim Corrigan. His involvement in the series extended to directing.
Darren has been married twice. In 1955, he married Gloria Terlitzky, who gave birth to his son Jim. The couple divorced after three years. In 1960, the actor married Evi Norlund, Miss Denmark, with whom he had two sons, Christian and Anthony.
