Pulp Fiction director believes LGBT+ actors shouldn’t be given priority for queer roles
During the conversation, Maher criticized the practice of giving preference to diversity in casting processes and asked Tarantino about his views on casting actors in roles that do not match their sexual identity. Maher mentioned that some actors, such as Tom Hanks, have said they would no longer accept roles as gay characters, as Hanks did in the film “Philadelphia”, which won him an Oscar.
Tarantino responded that he believes actors of different races should be given precedence when playing characters of their own ethnicity, but drew a line when it came to sexual identity. According to him, while he understands the importance of casting actors of specific races in roles that correspond to those identities, he does not see the same need for queer roles.
The director stated that he would like to see big-name actors, regardless of their sexual orientation, take on queer roles, highlighting the acting element involved. He mentioned that it would be interesting to see an actor like Al Pacino play a drag queen, because of the talent and acting ability that Pacino would bring to the role.
