The project connects emerging and established musicians, offering a collaborative and inclusive environment
Jennifer Stumm, an award-winning violist, conceived Ilumina as a festival that has evolved into an artistic and educational movement. The project connects emerging and established musicians, providing a collaborative and inclusive environment. Stumm emphasizes the importance of social equality and the transformative impact that Ilumina has on the lives and careers of the young musicians involved.
“Ilumina was born as a creative community, shining a light on talent, no matter where it comes from, and creating brilliant new experiences on stage together. It feels entirely right that, almost ten years later, we continue to move and grow as a community and will now radiate the power of this creative force on stages around the world,” explains Stumm.
The Ilumina Festival, held annually in January, brings together young Latin American musicians and professional soloists at a historic farm in the countryside of São Paulo. Under Stumm’s creative direction, the artists perform in a variety of locations, including mountains and the Sala São Paulo. During the festival, the young musicians collaborate intensively with the professionals, accumulating between 70 and 80 hours of joint practice.
On stage, Ilumina surprises the audience with innovative approaches that transform various musical genres. The concert “Na luz da sombra”, a highlight of the 2024 European tour, combines works by Baden-Powell, Beethoven, Lully, Mozart and Villa-Lobos with choreography, lighting and improvisations on Brazilian percussion instruments.
