South African artist explores new media to raise awareness of LGBT+ community
Known for using photography to educate the public about the queer community for over two decades, Muholi is now expanding her art into new media. The exhibition features pieces from her ongoing self-portrait series “Somnyama Ngonyama: Hail the Dark Lioness” (2012–), in which Muholi uses everyday items to adorn herself and create characters, addressing themes such as health, wellness and the legal status of LGBT people in South Africa.
Muholi’s sculptures, some draped in clerical robes and others depicting wombs and genitalia, bring issues of religion, anatomy and sexuality, including homosexuality, to the fore. The exhibition also reflects on the legacy of figures such as Frida Kahlo and Claude Cahun, acknowledging the influence of these artists on his work.
“Zanele Muholi” will be on display at the Southern Guild through August 31, offering visitors an immersive experience with prints and sculptures that explore the complexities and strengths of the LGBT+ community.
