Outsports list highlights increase in LGBTQIAPN+ representation at Paris Games
In Brazil, the majority of queer athletes are women, including Marta, captain of the women’s soccer team, Ana Marcela Cunha, from swimming, and Ana Carolina Silva, from volleyball. Among the men are Arthur Nory and Rayan Castro, from Olympic gymnastics, and Nick Albiero, from swimming.
Due to the language barrier and the large number of participants, Outsports believes the total number of LGBTQIAPN+ athletes in Paris could be higher. The website highlights a record number of openly gay male Olympic athletes this year.
The list aims to promote inclusion and acceptance in sport. It does not include athletes who, although confirmed as LGBTQIAPN+, asked not to be named to avoid family conflict or persecution in their countries.
Outsports explains that, in general, men come out publicly through the media, while women use social media more to do so. The list predominantly includes athletes from countries where being LGBTQIAPN+ is legal and culturally accepted, such as North and South America, Western and Northern Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
