Luxembourg wants to ban teaching of LGBT+ issues

Proposal for parliamentary debate on ban gathers more than 7,000 signatures

In just four days, Hélder Rui de Almeida Neves’ petition, which calls for the exclusion of LGBT+ topics from school curricula for minors in Luxembourg, has reached the necessary signatures to be debated in Parliament. As of Thursday, the 25th, the document, available on the website petitions.lu, has already collected almost 7,000 signatures, surpassing the 4,500 required to organize a public debate.

The author of the petition argues that “each family has the right to approach these issues according to their own beliefs and principles” and that, considering “the appropriate age and psychological development of minors, it is reasonable to admit that introducing these topics at an early age can disrupt the psychopedagogical development of children”.

Homophobic petition reaches necessary signatures
Hélder Almeida argues that “it is crucial that education on these subjects is adapted to the age and level of maturity of students”, suggesting that the government should “exclude the teaching of LGBT issues from programs aimed at minors or propose options that allow families to choose whether their children participate or not”.

The petitioner emphasizes that the aim of the initiative is not to discriminate or promote hatred against LGBT people. “It is not about homophobia or transphobia, but only about ensuring respect and appropriate educational guidance for all children,” he states.
