CUT signs commitment to respect LGBT+ rights in the fashion sector

The project is a partnership between DIEESE and the National Confederation of Clothing Workers of the CUT (CNTRV)

After more than two years of activities in various parts of Brazil, the project “Nós Vestimos Todas as Cores” enters its second phase, celebrating its success with an event on July 26. Created to combat LGBTphobia in the workplace in the fashion world, the project is a partnership between DIEESE and the National Confederation of Clothing Workers of the CUT (CNTRV), with support from Labora/Fundo Brasil.

At the ceremony, representatives of workers and employers will sign a commitment with seven principles of respect for LGBTQIAPN+ rights in the workplace. The signing of the Charter of Principles will take place in the CUT auditorium in São Paulo.

CNTRV directors, DIEESE technicians and directors of the main employers’ organizations in the clothing sector, including the Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association (ABIT), the Brazilian Footwear Industry Association (Abicalçados) and the Brazilian Textile Retail Association (Abvtex), will be present.

The initiative is considered unprecedented in the Brazilian trade union movement and resulted from a solid social dialogue with employers’ organizations. “This represents a historic milestone in the fight against discrimination and LGBTphobia in the workplace,” said Cida Trajano, president of CNTRV.

The document, already signed by the entities, addresses issues such as raising awareness among workers, training managers and managers, and the institutional commitment to respecting gender and sexual orientation diversity. The Charter of Principles arose from the realization that, despite the public stance of major brands against LGBTphobia, LGBTQIAPN+ workers still face significant challenges, from hiring to job retention.

DIEESE’s survey of workers in footwear and clothing factories revealed that the challenges are even greater for trans people, especially women. CNTRV and DIEESE hope that the signing of the document will encourage local unions to implement social dialogues and concrete actions, as well as to include clauses that guarantee the rights of LGBTQIAPN+ workers in collective agreements and conventions.

Charter of Principles

Promote a respectful, safe and healthy environment for LGBTQIAPN+ people.

Raise awareness and educate about respect for LGBTQIAPN+ rights.

Promote equal opportunities and fair treatment for LGBTQIAPN+ people.

Commit, presidency and executives, to respect and promote LGBTQIAPN+ rights.

Promote professional development actions for LGBTQIAPN+ people.

Promote the economic and social development of LGBTQIAPN+ people in the value chain.

Promote and support actions in favor of LGBTQIAPN+ rights in the community.
