None of the characters have faces, most of them are covered by paper bags, which subverts the LGBTQIA+ narrative
Director Marco Aurélio Gal explores the universe of the end of relationships in his animated short “Every Romance Ends Like This.” Full of symbolism and irony, the film follows a writer, who does not have his broken heart exposed, but his face bandaged, as he muses about romantic relationships, speaking to his conscience or self-esteem.
Everything is bizarrely interspersed with “Plantinha Strips” that add extra humor, while also offering some criticisms about dating apps or conventional dramatic structures.
Footnotes, acid jokes, a mix of languages within the genre itself, make the short film adopt a modern, casual and very personal language, throughout its Adult Swim atmosphere, reflecting the endings and new beginnings, when this thinking protagonist will finally be able to take the bandanas off his face.
With voices by Henrique de Paula, Alex Reis, Renato Mascarenhas, Hellen Vasconcelos, Marina Honda and Marco Aurélio Gal, the animation was selected for important festivals such as the 13th Rio LGBTQIA+, the 11th MoDive-Se, Mostra de Diversidade Sexual de Campinas and the 7th Santa Cruz Film Festival in Rio Grande do Sul. The short will be available online and for public voting starting July 21st on the Bang Awards website, Portugal’s International Animation Festival.
