Speech sets legislative agenda with focus on economy, environment, housing and policing
Prime Minister Keir Starmer stressed ahead of the speech that the “ambitious legislative agenda” will focus on “unlocking growth and improving living standards for workers”.
In his speech, the King announced the introduction of a bill to ban conversion practices, confirming Labour’s plans to implement a “total and inclusive ban on trans people” as promised in January. Conversion therapy includes abusive practices used by anti-LGBTQ+ groups or individuals that attempt to forcibly change a person’s sexuality or gender identity.
This is the third time the ban on conversion therapy has been mentioned in a speech by the monarch, the first two times being under the previous Conservative government. The legislative agenda also includes bills relating to the economy, environment, housing and policing, reflecting the new Labour government’s priorities for the next parliamentary session.
