Bill bans children from LGBT+ parades in Mato Grosso

State deputy Elizeu Nascimento (PL) presented a bill that aims to prohibit children under 12 years old from participating in LGBTQIA+ parades and similar events. The text should be put to a vote in plenary in the coming days.

According to the parliamentarian, the project aims to “enable physical, mental, moral, spiritual and social development, in conditions of freedom and dignity”. Nascimento argues that the initiative seeks to protect children and adolescents from participating, often against their will, in events that originally have a respectful and educational character, but which, according to him, have taken on “distorted tones” lately.

Nascimento explains that, initially, the “Gay Pride Parades” played a crucial role in promoting sexual freedom and raising awareness about the challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community, demonstrating pride in their lifestyles. However, he notes that there is currently a “distortion” of this social movement, with vulgarization, attacks on traditional families, religions, and people with different political opinions, in addition to the early sexualization of children and adolescents.

The parliamentarian emphasizes that the legislative proposal aims to condemn and prohibit the use of images of children in these events, since, in his view, they do not yet have the necessary discernment to definitively understand their sexual orientation. The bill was introduced in 2023, when Nascimento was in legislative activity.

Nascimento emphasizes that the proposal does not seek to affront the essence of the LGBTQIA+ movement, but rather to ensure that children’s participation in events is always respectful, voluntary and appropriate to their age and development. He reiterates the commitment to protecting children and adolescents in the State of Mato Grosso, seeking to ensure that their participation in events is consistent with their physical, mental and social development.

The proposal will be analyzed in the coming days, and Nascimento is on leave for a period of 30 days.
