Currently, the crime of LGBTcide is judged as simple homicide, with a sentence of 6 to 20 years in prison. With the new proposal, the sentence will increase to 12 to 30 years in prison, served entirely in a closed regime.
The proposal includes homicides committed against homosexuals, bisexuals, transsexuals, transvestites and intersex people due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. The rapporteur of the project in the committee, Congresswoman Erika Kokay (PT-DF), highlighted the importance of the change in the Penal Code.
“It will be extremely important to put an end to this current situation of chaos, with the legislature fulfilling its role of protecting all citizens, regardless of who they are,” said Kokay. The bill will still be analyzed by the Constitution and Justice and Citizenship Committee (CCJ) and by the Chamber’s Plenary before being sent to the Senate.
