Thailand celebrates first LGBTI+ Pride since legalizing marriage

Thousands of Thais marched in Bangkok on Sunday, 30, to celebrate LGBTI+ Pride, the first since the approval of the law allowing same-sex marriage, which is expected to come into effect by the end of the year. “I join the celebrations of this month of equality because I believe in equal love. This June is different, because in Thailand we approved equal marriage,” said Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin in a message on the social network X.

Waving a flag with the words “love, equality and peace”, the leader led one of the floats that passed through the streets of the capital to commemorate the event. Throughout June, Bangkok and other Thai cities have organized symposia, exhibitions and events to celebrate LGBTI+ Pride month.

The law, which is expected to come into force at the end of 2024, introduces the designation of marriage as a union between “two people” instead of “a man and a woman”. It also changes the legal status of “husband and wife” to “a couple”, without specifying the gender.

On June 18, Thailand became the first country in Southeast Asia and the third in Asia, after Taiwan and Nepal, to legalize same-sex marriage.

The new legislation grants LGBTI+ couples the same rights as heterosexual couples, including inheritance, tax benefits and adoption of children. Thailand has also expressed interest in hosting World Pride in 2030.
