Standing Committee for the Promotion of Gender and Racial Equality of the Federal Senate creates initiative to guarantee safety and inclusion
In an interview with the podcast “Senado e Você”, Stella Maria Vaz, coordinator of the Committee, highlighted the importance of the group: “In 2020, we created the Race Working Group, which greatly promoted the racial agenda through a space for welcoming, listening and strengthening. With this new group, we will also be able to promote the LGBTQIA+ agenda. The first step to giving voice is to ensure attentive listening.”
Osmar Arouck, coordinator of the new working group, emphasized that the results should serve as a reference for society: “The Senate is a very powerful showcase, where public policies and rights are established; we must carry out the normal and daily exercise of guaranteeing these rights here. In addition to welcoming people with their diverse expressions within sexual diversity, the group will welcome family and friends, allies, who are on the side of this fight. It is a question of visibility, of guaranteeing rights and of not backing down on the achievements that have already been made.”
The creation of the group is a necessary response to the violence and discrimination faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. A dossier released by the Ministry of Human Rights last year revealed that, in 2022, Brazil recorded 273 cases of violent deaths of LGBTQIA+ people. According to the most recent IBGE Census, 9% of the Brazilian population identifies as part of this group.
