RJ gains Gender and Sexuality Diversity Statute

The Rio de Janeiro city of Niterói is celebrating International LGBT+ Pride Day with great news: the Gender and Sexuality Diversity Statute of the State of Rio de Janeiro has been filed. The initiative comes from the tireless councilor Benny Briolly (PSol).

She explains that “on June 13th, our Popular Mandate, together with OAB Niterói, DCE Fernando Santo Cruz, Rede Trans UFF and Centro de Cidadania Paulo Gustavo, we filed the Statute of Gender and Sexuality Diversity in Niterói “.

Benny says that “the importance of this statute lies in the political dimension, since it engages with gender and sexuality issues based on the axes of citizenship rights: education, health, public safety and employability”.

According to her, “this implies equalizing the civil rights of the LGBTQIAPN+ community at the municipal level and requires the competent bodies to exercise their roles in guaranteeing access, protection and expansion of fundamental rights”.

The councilor recalled that “Niterói and its regions record one case of violence against LGBTQIAPN+ people per day, and Brazil is the country that kills this population the most in the world, even more than countries where there is the death penalty for homosexuality”.

“Therefore, given this scenario and the various forms of violence that our community has historically suffered, it is the municipality’s duty to promote the inclusion of all people and combat discrimination and intolerance. This is a significant advance for our community, We will not lower our heads, we will continue to face LGBTphobia and fascism in our city.”
