Actor reveals he was discarded after signing a contract for three films in the franchise
Matt Bomer, renowned for his performances in “White Collar” and “Magic Mike”, revealed that he was dropped from the role of Superman in the 2000s due to his sexual orientation. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter podcast, the actor stated that he believes his contract with Warner Bros. was terminated after executives discovered that he is gay.
“That’s what I understand,” Bomer declared. “Back then, being gay was something you hid because it could hurt your career.” The actor was scheduled to play Superman in three films.
He stressed that being gay “could still be used against someone” and that he doesn’t know how executives found out about his sexuality. “How and why this information reached the producers, I don’t know. But what I understood was that my sexuality was the reason”, he reinforced.
The project in question, “Superman: Flyby”, would be directed by Brett Ratner, who left the project in 2003. The film never got off the ground, and Ratner cited the “difficulty of casting the role of Superman” as one of the reasons for his withdrawal.
Matt Bomer, who recently starred in the film “Maestro”, nominated for seven Oscars in 2024, has been married since 2011 to publicist and actor Simon Halls. Bomer continues to be an active voice in the industry, advocating for inclusion and diversity in Hollywood.
