Free booklet guides you on changing your name in registry offices

The material details the step-by-step process for rectifying birth and marriage registrations in registry offices in all municipalities

The National Association of Natural Persons Registrars (Arpen-Brasil) launched a booklet aimed at the LGBTQIA+ population that explains the procedures for changing names and gender in Civil Registry offices for Natural Persons.

The material details the step-by-step process for rectifying birth and marriage registration in registry offices in all municipalities in Brazil, including the list of documents necessary to carry out the procedure.

The request for rectification of gender and name can be made at any of the 7,660 Civil Registry offices in the country, which will forward the procedure to the registry office where the person’s birth was registered. You can change just the name, just the gender, or both.

Anyone aged 18 or over who does not identify with the gender recorded on their birth certificate can change without the need for legal proceedings. For minors, the procedure must be carried out judicially.

The procedure is based on the person’s autonomy, and it is not necessary to perform sexual reassignment surgery.
