CCBB-RJ chooses work for Reading Club focused on Literature and Gender Identity
This month’s theme aims to promote reflection on the complexity of representation in art, especially in literature. The Club’s curator and mediator, Suzana Vargas, asks: “Does the creation of stories, poems and other literary texts depend on the gender of the speaker? In other words, how does gender identity reflect and determine creation?”
The event also seeks to stimulate debate about diversity during LGBTQIAPN+ Pride month, encouraging reading and reflection on the publishing market. The in-person meeting is scheduled for July 10, 2024, on the second Wednesday of the month, at CCBB Rio de Janeiro.
To deepen the discussion on literature and diversity, the event will feature the participation of author Tom Grito, writer and thinker Rita von Hunty, and poet and journalist Ramon Nunes Melo. Suzana Vargas highlights that each of the guests develops literature that reflects the complexity of the human experience, addressing topics such as race, gender, sexual orientation, and much more. “What has changed in contemporary times?” asks Vargas, when exploring how literature can reflect these changes.
About the books
Before it’s too late to talk about poetry: Originally published under the name Letícia Brito, this book was re-released in 2023 by Tom Grito, after the author assumed his male identity. The work maintains the original text and features poems that reflect contemporary everyday life in an intense and visceral way, as described by Marcelino Freire.
I know how to get out of this alive: Published in 2023, it brings together oral texts by Tom Grito, including long poems, letters and notes exchanged with other poets. The work questions poetry itself as a “non-place” in terms of material survival and includes reflections on the pandemic and life as a poet.
The meeting with Tom Grito, Rita Von Hunty and Ramon Nunes Mello will be on July 10, 2024, at 5:30 pm, at the Banco do Brasil Library, on the 5th floor of CCBB RJ, with free entry. The CCBB 2024 Reading Club is sponsored by Banco do Brasil, and videos of the meetings will be available on the BB YouTube channel. The project continues until December 2024, with previous sessions now available online.
