Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf awarded ABBA members the Order of the Vasa for their outstanding contribution to Swedish and world musical culture, reports SVT.
Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad became commanders in the 1st class of this royal order.
The award ceremony was held on May 31 at the Royal Palace and became another reason for the group members to come together.
The pop group ABBA was created in 1972 and existed for just over 10 years. In 1974 they won the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Waterloo. In the 2000s, the musical Mamma Mia was created based on the group’s songs. In March 2010, ABBA was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In addition to ABBA musicians, other Swedish cultural figures, scientists, military men, diplomats and businessmen have received royal awards, including the Order of the Vasa.
Let’s add that the Order of the Vasa has not been awarded since 1975.
It was previously reported that the stamps will be issued in Britain in honor of the 30th anniversary of the Spice Girls.
