The Hootenanny acoustic guitar, played by The Beatles lead singer John Lennon, sold for nearly $3 million.
An acoustic guitar belonging to John Lennon from The Beatles has been sold at auction in the United States for more than $2.85 million. It was reported by Julien’s Auctions.
According to organizers, the musical instrument became the fifth most expensive lot associated with the Beatles history.
The guitar was purchased by telephone bidding at New York’s Hard Rock Cafe as part of Julien’s Auctions’ two-day sale of musical icons.
“The guitar witnessed the birth of some of Lennon’s best-loved songs. It was a faithful companion to The Beatles in their early career, played in smoky pubs and crowded recording studios. It played an important role in shaping the sound that defined the lives of an entire generation. Today’s owner retains a piece of Lennon’s soul and a connection to the creative energy that permeated him and influenced the lives of millions,” said of auctioneers.
John Lennon bought this musical instrument in 1964. Lennon and George Harrison used it in The Beatles Help! (1965) and Rubber Soul (1965).
At the end of 1965, John Lennon gave the guitar to Gordon Waller of Peter & Gordon, with whom Lennon and McCartney wrote songs. Waller later gave the guitar to his manager, who took it home, threw it in the attic and didn’t speak of it for decades.
“We worked closely with musician, author and Beatles Gear expert Andy Babuk to confirm that this Hootenanny, serial number 51083, is indeed John Lennon’s guitar,” the auction house said.
It was previously reported that the guitar of the founder of the famous British group The Beatles, John Lennon, will be sold at auction.
