Congress points out obstacles to combat prejudice against LGBT+

Public hearing in Brasília highlighted fake news and bills that seek to remove rights

A public hearing at the National Congress, in Brasília (DF), highlighted fake news and bills that seek to remove rights as obstacles to combating prejudice against the LGBT+ community. Participants suggested that Congress take initiatives to reverse this situation. The debate, organized on the 15th by the Human Rights Commission (CDH), was held in reference to the International Day against LGBTphobia, celebrated on May 17th.

The president of the commission, senator Paulo Paim (PT-RS), requested the hearing, but was unable to conduct it due to commitments related to the floods that led almost 400 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul to a calamity situation. Senator Zenaide Maia (PSD-RN) took over the work and highlighted the setbacks not only in Brazil, but globally.

“We have seen setbacks not only in Brazil, but all over the world. They use intimidation and repetitive lies, the so-called fake news, with mastery. They claim that these rights destroy the family. Therefore, we who defend all of you need to show that this does not It’s true,” said Zenaide.

Public Prosecutor Lucas Costa Almeida Dias, coordinator of the Working Group “LGBTQIA+ population: protection of rights”, reported the existence of more than 80 bills being processed in the two Legislative Houses that aim to attack the rights of this community. He mentioned projects that try to end same-sex marriage and ban the use of neutral language, among others.

Dias cited the example of Australia, where authorities apologized for acts against the LGBT+ community. One of his suggestions was the approval of an official motion to apologize from Congress for legislative acts against the community. He also recommended that the CDH map these initiatives.

“The Federal Senate can be one of the mobilizers of this progress. Map these laws that challenge our existence in areas such as neutral language, sports, use of bathrooms, marriage, and other threatened rights. This commission can carry out this mapping in a strategic way”, he suggested the prosecutor.
