New laws are codifying old prejudices, exploiting fears and fueling hatred, says the organization
The United Nations (UN) published this Friday, May 17, a message celebrating the International Day to Combat Homophobia – but also drawing attention to the fact that some steps back were also taken around the world.
“On this International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, I salute the courageous work of human rights defenders of LGBTIQ+ people who fight to end discrimination and guarantee equality before the law,” said António Guterres, secretary-general of United Nations.
According to his message, “however, there is a worrying trend in the opposite direction. New laws are codifying old prejudices, exploiting fears and fueling hatred. The criminalization of same-sex relationships must end, just as all violence, discrimination and harmful practices against LGBTIQ+ communities”.
The secretary-general also assured that “on this day and every other day, we will commit to building a world of respect, dignity and human rights for everyone around the world.”
