On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the martyr Pelagia of Tarsus.
The future saint was born in the 3rd century in the city of Tarsus of Cilicia (Asia Minor) and was the son of noble pagans. When he heard a sermon about Christ from Christian friends, he believed in him and wanted to devote his life to the Lord.
The young woman was very beautiful and captured the heart of Emperor Diocletian’s adopted son. However, he was baptized and refused to marry. This shocked the young man so much that he stabbed himself with the sword.
Pelagia’s mother, fearing the wrath of the emperor, bound her daughter and brought her to Diocletian’s trial as a Christian and the supposed culprit in the death of the heir to the throne.
The emperor was fascinated by the extraordinary beauty of the girl and he tried to distract her from the faith, promising benefits and offering to be his wife. But Pelagia rejected all proposals.
Diocletian then sentenced him to be burned in a hot bronze testament. The saint suffered torture and death in 290.
People called this day Pelageya, Pelageya the Mediator.
Saint Pelagia is considered the patroness of birds, innocent girls and all those who have been unjustly harmed.
In the evening of this day, the farmers took a broken pot from the garden, filled it with plucked nettles and placed the vessel in the middle of the bed. It is believed that it will scare away evil spirits and garden pests.
Saint Pelagia’s day is also called baydyks day. During this period, trees were cut to make spoons and made into blanks – boats.
On the day of Pelagia, it is forbidden to kill roosters and chickens – it is believed that the bird will cease to be found. For the same reason, they refuse to eat chicken dishes.
It is not recommended to cut your nails, because they can take away your well-being and prosperity.
