Affectionately known as Nick, Nicolas Albiero, made history last Wednesday (8), by winning the men’s 200m butterfly at the Brazil Trophy, thus securing a place at the Paris Games, which begin on July 26. However, this triumph is not the only milestone in the trajectory of this 24-year-old athlete. He also became the first openly gay Brazilian swimmer to compete in the Olympics.
Born in the United States and later naturalized as Brazilian, Nick Albiero is the son of coach Arthur Albiero and American Amy. Currently, he trains at Minas Tênis Clube, in Minas Gerais.
Almost a year ago, he made the decision to represent Brazil in competitions and moved to Belo Horizonte, leaving behind his hometown of Louisville, in the state of Kentucky, to join the Minas Gerais club in their training.
“I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has supported me in any way, whether by cheering, sending messages or celebrating. I apologize for my limited Portuguese, I will continue classes for the next two months,” Nick wrote on his Instagram after securing his place at the Olympics.
On his social networks, the athlete makes a point of highlighting the struggles of the LGBT+ community and shares records of his participation in events such as pride parades.
