Doc is streaming, expanding access to an essential documentary for LGBT+ History
Available on Netflix, Globoplay, YouTube, Google Play and Apple TV, the more than essential documentary “Divinas Divas” has greatly expanded access to such rich, powerful material and a key piece in understanding the LGBT+ community. It is directed by actress Leandra Leal, who grew up surrounded by transvestite artists and also tells a little about this experience.
“Divinas Divas” portrays the first generation of transvestite artists in Brazil. Rogéria, Valéria, Jane di Castro, Camille K., Fujica de Holliday, Eloína, Marquesa and Brigitte de Búzios formed the group that witnessed the heyday of Cinelândia, full of cinemas and theaters.
They come together for a memorable show and the backstage of this production guides the doc, which features interviews with the artists and friends and personalities who witnessed this era. A time where “dressing as a woman” was prohibited, hormonal treatment was not so easy to find and staying alive, in itself, was already a challenge.
