The purpose is to protect, promote and defend the rights of people in situations of social vulnerability
In the National Program for Strengthening LGBTQIA+ Shelters, the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship (MDHC) selected 12 projects and 3 more for the reserve register of the program led by the National Secretariat for the Rights of LGBTQIA+ People in joint action with the Regional Management of Brasília from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz).
The partnership will invest in welcoming LGBT+ people in vulnerable situations – due to discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation and/or sexual characteristics. R$1.4 million will be allocated to strengthen 12 shelters for LGBT+ people
Among the projects selected for Acolher+ across the country are institutions such as Casa FloreSer, from Maranhão; CasaNem, in Rio de Janeiro; the Ezequias Rocha Rego Reception Center (CAERR), in Alagoas; the NGO Construindo Igualdade, in Rio Grande do Sul; Casa Miga, in Amazonas; the Casarão Brasil Associação LGBTI, in São Paulo; Casa Rosa, in the Federal District; among others.
Created in December 2023, by Ordinance No. 755/2023, the National Program for Strengthening LGBTQIA+ Shelters forms part of the National Strategy for Combating Violence against LGBTQIA+ People.
The purpose is to protect, promote and defend the rights of people in situations of social vulnerability. The execution of the project is supported by the Foundation for Scientific and Technological Development in Health (Fiotec).
“This program was born with the expectation that the plans, actions and development of projects by the Executive Branch observe the importance of institutionalizing public policies for LGBTQIA+ people”, declared the national secretary for the Rights of LGBTQIA+ People, Symmy Larrat, in the launch of the initiative.
The target audience is people between 18 and 65 years old in a situation of family abandonment, with priority given to individuals with increased vulnerability due to the crossing of other social markers, such as race and ethnicity, territory, class, gender, age, religiosity, disability and others.
In addition to investing in strengthening the selected shelter homes, the Program also established the Evaluation and Monitoring Committee to monitor the actions to be instituted by Acolher+.
