Minima Gesté is one of the people selected to lead the flame during its visit to the city
The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, expressed a firm condemnation this Friday (3) of the homophobic and transphobic comments directed at drag queen Minima Gesté, one of the people selected to carry the Olympic torch during her visit to the capital in 14 and 15 July.
In a statement, Hidalgo strongly denounced the manifestations of prejudice present in Minima Gesté’s presentation video, stating that such attitudes are completely repudiated by the city of Paris.
The choice of Minima Gesté as torchbearer was explained by the city hall as a way to promote a message of love, inclusion and equality. The drag queen, in her video, highlighted the importance of visibility for acceptance, expressing her pride in representing the LGBT+ community at the historic event.
Hidalgo highlighted that, a decade ago, the idea of a drag queen carrying the Olympic torch would have been unthinkable, but today it represents a significant step forward towards diversity and inclusion.
Regarding the offensive comments, Hidalgo announced that he has forwarded the cases to the Prosecutor’s Office and assured the city’s support for any legal action that Minima Gesté may take against digital harassment, particularly originating from sectors of the extreme right.
