The singer’s new album has shaken those who think it is possible for one musical style to exist superior to another.
Anitta released another album this Friday, April 26th and, once again, faces a barrage of criticism based on the idea that only she makes funk with very bold lyrics, in the certainty of some that there is a musical rhythm superior to another, following a historical disregard for the culture that comes from the hill. “Funk Generation” has 15 songs and has already conquered the music charts, social networks and the artist’s fans.
However, Anitta put in a lot of careful production work, which included the participation of divo Sam Smith, to face a conservative wave that only targets controversy, that doesn’t know how to give an opinion on musical composition, that has barely or hasn’t even heard the album. When Brazil looks in the mirror, every time, it doesn’t recognize itself.
Funk is a huge cultural movement that expresses the everyday reality of communities, peripheries and all places outside the mainstream center, dominated by whiteness, smelling of lavender. For many years, and apparently still today, it was criminalized because it was “pornographic”, because it openly talks about sex, sexuality and sensuality.
When a woman decides, herself, to sing about her sexuality and her pleasure, the time comes for the dark holes of machismo to bring their angry, prejudiced, aggressive beings into the light of day. Repressed, frankly speaking. The artist herself recognizes this:
“When these lyrics are sung by a man, no one says anything, there are things that are even worse. When it’s a man, it’s really cool, when it’s a woman… I don’t care, guys. What I want more is to have fun. I set an example as a person, for those who want to know more about me, my personality”, he said at the launch press conference.
It is yet another execrable example that Brazil sees itself in a very mistaken way, outside of reality – how can we then solve any problem? Those who don’t live with, live with or at least know about the daily lives of the majority of Brazilian people, who are not rich, who live in simple houses, who struggle all day, find funk dirty, rude. Pure elitism.
It is necessary to reinforce: funk, and every musical style, is an artistic expression of the environment. Before complaining, we need to change this reality, not the letters.
