Prosecutors sent a request to the State Department of Penitentiary Administration of the State
The Public Ministry of the State of Bahia (MP-BA) wants more dignity for the Bahian LGBT+ prison population, which is why it recommended that the State Secretariat for Penitentiary Administration and Sustainable Resocialization (Seap) adopt measures to ensure the rights of the community in the prison system.
Last week, prosecutors Edmundo Reis, Márcia Teixeira and Andréa Ariadna Correia sent a document to Seap suggesting collaboration with the National Secretariat for Penal Policies (Senappen) to adjust the forms, records and systems of the Penitentiary Administration System (Siapen ), including the fields “sexual orientation” and “gender identity”.
Furthermore, Seap was recommended to adopt the Manual on Ambulatory and Surgical Care in Sexual Diversity to guarantee the right to health of the LGBT+ population in custody, accused, defendant, convicted, deprived of liberty, in compliance with criminal alternatives or electronically monitored.
It was also suggested that health campaigns be conducted to identify and treat sexually transmitted infections (STIs) within prison facilities, as established in Resolution No. 348/2020 of the National Council of Justice (CNJ).
Prosecutors emphasized the equality of all before the law, citing the Federal Constitution, and stated that LGBT+ people deserve to be treated with dignity, respect and protection.
