Masp opens exhibition about black LGBT+ experiences

“Video Room: Tourmaline” features videos by American artist, filmmaker, writer and activist Tourmaline

The São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand Museum of Art (Masp) opens its audiovisual exhibition next Friday (26) on ways of survival of the black and LGBT+ communities in the United States. The exhibition “Video Room: Tourmaline” features videos by American artist, filmmaker, writer and activist Tourmaline, 40.

By establishing relationships between fiction and reality, Tourmaline seeks to reformulate beliefs and initiate a paradigm shift with the aim of imagining a future without oppression based on race, gender and sexuality.

The artist tries to rewrite dominant narratives and stories with quotes and references to figures of queer resistance in the United States, such as Marsha P. Johnson – an activist considered an icon of the Stonewall uprising.

Curated by Teo Teotonio, the artist’s debut exhibition in Brazil brings together the works “Atlantic is a sea of bones” (2017), “Happy Birthday, Marsha!” (2018) and “Salacia” (2019).

“Video Room: Tourmaline” is the second exhibition of 2024 at the museum and is part of the annual program dedicated to the stories of LGBT+ diversity.
