Juh Círico officially became a doctor at the Federal University of Uberlândia
“But what about us, trans people who work in the accounting field? Trans women, transvestites, trans men, transmasculinities and non-binary people exist! They are also part of the accounting profession and deserve all the respect, recognition and visibility!” The speech is from the first transvestite in Brazil with a PhD in Accounting. Juh Círico defended the thesis “Voices of resistance: experiences of transgender and transvestite people in Brazilian accounting” in the Postgraduate Program in Accounting Sciences at the Federal University of Uberlândia (PPGCC/UFU).
The research discussed the experiences of transgender and transvestite people in Brazilian accounting, both in academic environments and in university teaching. Furthermore, he analyzed organizational accounting environments and realized that institutional and business initiatives related to the access and permanence of transgender and transvestite people in universities and companies are rare.
“Movements of exclusion and expulsion against transgender and transvestite people are present in the most diverse spaces of Brazilian society, whether in schools, universities, companies and in the family environment, considering that the average age at which trans and transvestite people are expelled from home is at 13 years old. When reviewing the literature, I realized that most of the studies are in the health area, very few are in the business area”, he comments.
Regarding the importance of being the first transvestite with a doctorate in Accounting in Brazil, she recognizes that it is challenging, but reinforces that there is hope and the need for a welcoming, human and inclusive academic environment. The next steps involve studies with international reviews and also a post-doctorate focused on transgender and transvestite employability in Brazil.
