The banknotes featuring Charles will be used alongside previous banknotes featuring Queen Elizabeth II.
The Bank of England presented the first banknotes bearing his portrait to King Charles III. This was announced by Buckingham Palace.
“The King was shown the first banknotes bearing his image this morning in an audience with Andrew Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England, and Sarah John, Chief Cashier and Chief Executive of Banking, Buckingham Palace said,” statement.
According to tradition, the monarch must receive the first copies of the new banknotes. This means that the king was given banknotes with the numbers 00001.
This is the first time that the image of a monarch has been changed on a banknote. Since 1960, they have depicted only Queen Elizabeth II. Currency featuring the image of the late Queen will also remain in circulation.
The £10 note will go into circulation on June 5.
