The General Court canceled the inclusion of shareholders of the Russian Alfa-Bank Petr Aven and Mikhail Fridman in the lists of persons subject to restrictive measures. The servants of Themis decided that the grounds on which the businessmen were included in the lists were not sufficiently substantiated, and the EU Council did not provide additional evidence. This is stated in a press release published on the court’s website.
Aven and Fridman were subject to sanctions after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. After that, they left the supervisory structures of Alfa-Bank.
Businessmen decided to challenge the sanctions. They said they had “no way” to influence the policies of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. However, the Council of the European Union believed that billionaires financially support the dictatorship and advocate war against Ukraine. Both oligarchs lived in Great Britain after the start of the war and said that they were against the war.
Also, Fridman and Aven were included in the US sanctions list in 2023.
Let us recall that on April 5, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky extended new sanctions against persons associated with smuggling. The new sanctions list included seven businessmen with citizenship of Ukraine, Israel, Romania, Armenia and Russia.
