Greece took a big step and became the first country with an Orthodox majority to legalize same-sex marriage and adoption for same-sex couples
Greece became the first Orthodox Christian country to legalize same-sex marriage and adoption for same-sex couples.
To achieve the achievement, the country managed to approve the change in the Constitution with 176 votes in favor and 76 against.
With this decision, Greece became the 37th in the world and the first of the Orthodox Christian religion to legalize same-sex marriage.
Despite strong opposition from the Orthodox Church, the prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis managed to approve the measure, since, for it to work, it only required a majority of votes.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis dealt with disagreements within his own party, but gained support from left-wing parties.
In his speech to open the vote, the prime minister said that it was necessary to abolish a serious inequality, since Greek democracy kept same-sex families as invisible.
