Town and church holidays
On September 27, the church calendar marks the day of remembrance of the martyr Kalistratus and his wife. He was born and lived in Carthage. His grandfather served the Emperor Tiberius faithfully in Palestine. He even witnessed the suffering of Jesus Christ. So, Kallistrat’s father was a Christian and raised his son in a pious faith. Every night, when the others are asleep, Kalistratus prays. One day a warrior heard his prayer and reported it to the commander. The latter immediately summoned Kalistratus and tried to force him to sacrifice to the idols. But the man refused.
Kalistrat cannot be destroyed by fear or suffering. His torturer then ordered the man to be sewn into a sack and thrown into the sea. However, God tore the bag, and Kalistratus remained unknown. The dolphins helped him reach the beach. This miracle was seen by 49 soldiers who also began to believe in Christ. The military commander then ordered them all to be thrown into prison and severely beaten. Later, a temple was built at the place of their suffering.
