The actor Matthew Scott Montgomerywho participated in Disney series such as Jessi It is Austin & Ally commented on a traumatic experience he went through while working at the company.
During your participation in the podcast Vulnerablethe actor recalled a traumatizing experience in a gay healing therapy session and spoke about the pressure of heteronormativity in the transition to adulthood.
“I grew up: you find out what sport you’re good at and you get a scholarship for it. If that doesn’t work, you get a scholarship, go to college, find a woman to marry, and then get a house,” he spoke.
“That was the only option I was told or seen. Which feels like my first nightmare. No offense to anyone,” he said.
Matthew revealed that he sought therapy while he decided to become an artist in Hollywood in the hope of becoming heterosexual and, after being signed by Disney, the actor began to undergo more intense treatments that included everything from hypnosis to electroshock techniques.
Furthermore, the actor stated that Disney had nothing to do with his choice of sexual conversion and spoke of how his friendship with Demi Lovato helped him and served as a refuge from his problems.
“She and I became friends and bonded. Family meets family, when you meet another queer person you just feel it, you become attached to that person,” he completed.
