Deputy Erika Hilton proposes quota law for transvestites and transsexuals in higher education

The bill aims to reserve 5% of places in public universities for trans and transvestites

the federal deputy Erika Hiltonfrom the Socialism and Freedom Party (PSOL), had an initiative that could increase opportunities for the transsexual population in Brazil.

The proposal aims to reserve about 5% of vacancies in public universities for transgender and transvestite people, with the aim of promoting inclusion and promoting equal opportunities in the labor market for the LGBTQIAP+ community.

“A university degree is an important path towards our economic independence and employability, even more so when you take into account that many of us do not have any support from our families”he spoke.

“The higher education diploma can fulfill the dream of many of us to leave the streets, and, for the younger ones, the possibility of never entering that life”said the deputy.

According to studies by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), about 90% of transvestites and transsexuals in the country are limited to working in compulsory prostitution, due to the lack of viable livelihood alternatives.

These facts reinforce the importance of the bill presented by Erika, which seeks to break with this history, creating real opportunities for education and professional training for the population of the LGBTQIAP+ community.

By separating vacancies in public universities exclusively for trans and transvestites, the proposed law intends to create a secure basis for future equal integration in the labor market.

By investing in the education and academic training of this community, the project can inhibit discrimination and marginalization, providing greater representation and active participation in the country’s social and economic growth.

The partnership between the deputy and numerous institutions engaged in the LGBTQIAP+ cause was essential for the elaboration of the project. Among the entities involved are Equi – Employability Trans and LGBTQIA+; Study Group on Law and Sexuality (FDUSP); Unicamp Trans Consciousness Nucleus; Trans Enem Poa; UERJ Trans and Transvestite Students Network; Collective Intertransvestigener Xica Manicongo from USP; Transpassing Collective; LGBT Council of Fortaleza; Revista Estudos Transviades; Collective LGBTQIAPN+ Dandara dos Santos; Brazilian Institute of Transmasculinities; Trans Corps at USP; Collective TransUFBA; Rede Transvestis UFFianas and DCE UFF Fernando Santa Cruz.
