Professor Edgard Santos University Hospital (HUPES) is the first in the state to perform the procedures for free
The Professor Edgard Santos University Hospital (HUPES), of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), achieved a great and important mark: it became the first in Bahia to perform gender-affirmative surgeries, masculinizing mammoplasty, hysterectomy, thyroplasty and breast plastic surgery for free . That is, the procedures will be done by the Unified Health System, the SUS.
Patients can count on a Transsexualization Outpatient Clinic that specializes in supporting the health of transgender people and has been accredited by the Ministry of Health since 2018.
Now HUPES gets the surgery program. At the beginning, the hospital may offer a monthly vacancy to carry out the procedures.
The idea of the project is that this can be expanded and that the institution can be accredited as a hospital unit together with the Ministry of Health to expand the offer to the public.
Ubirajara Barroso Jr.the surgeon responsible for the team that performed the first procedure, said that this type of surgery is new in Bahia and that the patient is recovering well.
“Regular reassignment surgeries are a novelty in Bahia, where the demand is quite significant. On this first patient, we performed clitoroplasty, vaginoplasty and labiaplasty. In other words, we performed the construction of a neovagina using the patient’s own tissues. testicles”he said.
