Resilience! DJ Juliana Maddeira talks about a very serious accident that burned 10% of her body

According to data from the Ministry of Health, in Brazil, at least 100,000 people are victims of burns per year, most of which cannot survive.

Juliana Maddeiraa 28-year-old DJ from Rio de Janeiro, was one of the victims in June 2022.

“I was at home having dinner for two, I had bought a fondue pot that day and I was looking forward to using it, the fire often seemed lower and I would throw alcohol gel insistently with the aim of increasing the flame and continuing the process. dinner, until after many times, there was an explosion, the fire came towards me and I saw my body in flames, I could only ask for help, I begged for my life…”, said.

The artist, who had no idea of ​​what was happening, detailed how the process was until the hospital:

“I had no idea what was going on, I ran to the kitchen, turned off the fire on the sink faucet, ran to the bath because I still felt my body boiling, it felt like I was literally cooking, in the bath I ran my hand over my neck and my skin came off in my hand, then despair came, I began to beg the only person who was with me to take me to the hospital and so we went to the nearest one. Even after everything, I couldn’t understand what was happening to me, dozens of doctors surrounded me, I thought I was just going to apply an ointment and take an antibiotic, I couldn’t understand, I started having a panic attack, it was horrible…”, he said.

Juliana said that, at first, she insisted that her family not know what happened.

“I was very afraid of my mother knowing because she suffers from panic syndrome, until the doctor warned me that I would have to spend a night in the hospital, I didn’t understand, until they were forced to call my mother, she arrived and took me she saw, she was scared, I still hadn’t looked at myself, they called her into a room and she came to tell me that I was going to the ICU, when she told me it was desperate, I freaked out, after that I just remember waking up the next day returning from the operating room, my body was all bandaged, I was swollen and unrecognizable. There were 21 surgeries, I needed a skin graft on my arm, I fought every day for life while they gave me morphine every 6 hours to control the absurd pain that affected my whole body. 40 days in the hospital, 20 days in the ICU. In the middle of that, I caught an infection and despair was general, my body was open with wounds and the fear of the infection being generalized took over. The doctor called my father aside and said he didn’t know how I was still alive, I heard it sedated and I remember it like it was today, my family cried every day.”, he spoke.

Resilience! Eight months later, the DJ has managed to pull herself together and come back to life.

“I didn’t stay alive for nothing, everything has a purpose, I survived and I want to honor that, I want to live intensely absolutely everything. The first time I took a shower with absolutely no bandage on my body was crazy, I felt like I was in a waterfall (laughs), after starting to heal and having managed to win the battle of fighting for life, the fight for self-esteem came, it worked , I feel good, I know my strength and today when I play I try to bring my joy and resilience to everyone who watches, I surrender, laugh, dance, scream. I say that today I am a different woman from the girl who suffered that horrible accident, today I am life.”, finished.
