There’s a reason loafers have stood the test of time. The classic shoe, which has become even more popular in recent years, is extremely versatile, making it a wardrobe staple worthy of the investment. But styling loafers can get a little tricky, especially when it comes to socks. Don’t worry, though, because expert help is here.
“The beauty of a loafer is that it can really be worn for any occasion,” said international stylist Zadrian Smith, who is one half of celebrity duo Zadrian + Sarah. “Don’t limit yourself when styling loafers.”
Loafers have an inherently androgynous feel, Smith noted, so “sometimes people make the mistake of just pairing them with suits and pants.” But pairing the right loafers with a dress or skirt “can add an unexpected twist to a more feminine outfit, resulting in an interesting and modern look,” added Smith.

While many people associate loafers with formal or business attire, they can be just as well dressed down. “They look great paired casually with jeans and general casual wear,” said Smith. “They come in so many different colors and brands – it’s easy to find a style to match any outfit.”
Chunky loafers, for example, are particularly popular at the moment and add a relaxed vibe to an outfit. Equally light and casual are loafers, which Smith noted peaked in popularity in 2015 thanks to Gucci’s backless fur loafer. Instead, the preference for a more elegant occasion may be a slimmer silhouette or a loafer with more heels.
But what about socks? Unlike a sandal that exposes the entire leg or a boot that completely hides the socks, a loafer falls somewhere in the middle, meant to show off the socks or the ankles. In fact, showing a little (or a lot) of sock is often the key to getting the right loafer. So what’s the right way to put it all together?

Here are Smith’s tips for pairing any loafer with the right sock:

For an elegant moccasin
Smith noted that a “patterned pop sock or white sock” would “add some extra fun” to a loafer with a slimmer silhouette. This cotton ankle top adds an eye-catching element to any ensemble with its lime green and tan polka dot pattern.

“With a heeled loafer, keep it classic,” Smith said. “Either go for a long sock that goes past the ankle and can be easily pulled up, or go for sheer tights.” There’s extra length in this stretchy cotton pair that allows for an effortlessly casual look.

“No sock with a backless shoe is always a choice. But to add a fun element and another texture to your outfit, add a fishnet sock,” said Smith. “It can seriously elevate the look.” Part of a two-pack, this pair features a tighter knit for a slimmer interpretation of the style.

For moccasins and tailored trousers
When pairing loafers with over-the-ankle pants, choose “a calf-length stocking that goes under the bottom of the pants so no skin shows,” Smith said. “This will avoid any awkward proportions and add length to the ankle area.” This affordable three-pack has black, brown and cream options for a variety of outfits. The matte ribbed knit style can be worn with casual or dressier ensembles.

Smith said to “pair with sheer panties for the best leg stretch.” These black tights with a subtle polka dot pattern are expensive, but the tear-resistant material can help them last for years.
